 Wallpaper

by Frank on: Sep 14 2009

What kind of wallpaper do you suggest for the default? A more lighter one or a darker one?

Thank you for your input. :-)

Well, as it happened to Oxygen plasma theme - the light one would be better. The dark color doesn't look that optimistic and people might not like it. The lighter wallpaper would be quite nice. Something rather simple. Maybe make a contest on *-look.org?

a style similar to moblin or jolicloud would be the most useful i think. The wallpaper/style should fit to the full design of the Pc.

 Wallpaper

A light wallpaper could make it easier to lower the display bright, if it helps save battery. I love Vlad Gerasimov's Emotion which comes with KDE.

Yes, saving battery is one of the most interesting things. A simple, light look would be perfect.

I doubt a simple wallpaper uses less power than a complicated one...
The more dark it is, the less power it uses. Emotion would be indeed a good choice, but an OpenPC specific wallpaper would be nice also.
Maybe someone can try something ?

So you think it saves more battery if you got a dark wallpaper then having a light one and lower the display bright?
hmm. could be worth some studies... ;)

I'm sorry, but you're wrong. The darker a pixel on an LCD-Display is, the more voltage has to be used...
So a light theme does indeed save power (depending on the size of the display up to 0,7W-1,0W), which is an important factor.

Most powerful software - video processing and web design

Right here, I recommend you guys an excellent powerful program for multimedia processing and web design. It is Socusoft Web Video Player, which I came across on a download site a few days ago. Socusoft Web Video Player is an excellent tool which is integrated with powerful functions such as web video creation, video conversion (including video merging, video trimming, video playing), YouTube/Google video download and audio extraction. It provides fantastic solutions for making web videos.

This program allows you to publish your video clips of various formats on your website, blog, forum and more, making it play videos directly online. It just needs simple steps to complete a web video. Different from videos on YouTube, The web video generated by this program has an embedded player, which can be fully customized.

The principle of this application is to integrate your video with a player together with relevant output codes to be embedded into HTML of your webpage or blog. It will take you three steps to make a web video. The input files accept FLV format only so as to enable output video player to playback clips. You may meet with the problem about videos of different formats. Well, it has a conversion component which accepts various video formats, making it easy to convert your files to FLV format.

Portable Devices and Video Formats

=> Best optimize videos of different formats for Nokia series, iPod series, iPhone series, PSP, Zune, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, Motorola, Blackberry, Dopod, Creative Zen, Archos, iRiver, 3GS, Google phone (T-mobile G1) and other portable devices.
=> Convert movies, flash videos (FLV), MOV, WMV, MPEG-4, MPG, RM, RMVB, AVI, DivX, XviD, VOB, ASF, DV, 3GP, M1V, M2V into AVI, SWF, WMV, MP4, MOV, 3GP, FLV, MPG, MPEG4, MPEG and MPEG-II
=> Extract audio / music from video clips into MP3, WAV, WMA, M4A, OGG, AAC, AMR and MP2
=> Put videos to websites/blogs/forums and more and play online

You guys can go to its website for more information about its features and functions. As stated on its site: the trial version generates web videos with a logo at the top left corner of the web player which links to its website. The logo is no big deal for us video fans. As for trial version’s another point: URLs such as company URL and advertisement links also cannot be added to the web videos. I would like to say: the advertisement links adding function is useful to businessmen and website promoters only. So, as for us, don’t worry about it as there is no time limit or other key limits. We can still use it freely for fun and experience its cool features. I think you can find out more and you may report back here in the comments.

I don't think this is an appropriate place to advertise proprietary software.

 Adapted kernel

by aNordal on: Jan 24 2010

Shipping only one computer model is an opportunity for optimization. The stock kernel in openSUSE 11.2 contains a lot of drivers and debugging features. You may take /proc/config.gz as a safe starting point for configuring a specialized kernel. The goal is to get rid of unrelevant drivers, make essential drivers be compiled in (avoiding the need for initrd), and letting rarely used drivers remain in modules.

I did exactly this yesterday, and my laptop feels just a bit lighter.
