 open with INTEL????

 by k2mirror on: Jan 19 2010

The first step to make free pc to select a processor is free.
The best alternative is to select the OpenSPARC processor a Sun Microsystem.

i agree completelly with you - the freedom could be at least freedom of choice, whatever only between Intel and AMD, but would be great if we could choose even among ARM processor (even not having enough performance to face Intel and AMD) - as an open-hardware project, yes this would be great on supporting the open-sparc development, anyway i'm really curious about how this development is going when Sun were bought by Oracle... - one day i knew about a 256-core i386-compatible competitor and how far is it going in industrial production, would be great seeing open-pc pioneering on using it...

I agree - I would prefer 100% open hardware.

Maybe Open-PC 2.0 can have it.

The latest Ubuntu 9.10 not support the Sparc processor anymore.

"Sparc not supported by Ubuntu 9.10

The upstart init system in Ubuntu 9.10 fails to work on the sparc architecture due to an undiagnosed SIGBUS error. Users of Ubuntu on sparc are advised to remain on Ubuntu 9.04 instead of upgrading to 9.10. Assistance in resolving this architecture-specific bug for Ubuntu 10.04 is welcome. (436758)"

So I think you must have a balance to be able to sell any Open PC. And now when Oracle has bought SUN who knows how it be with Spark in future?

The father of ubuntu, debian support this and many other architectures.
The world does not end with ubuntu.

Once the Intel 945express chip set is out of production there is no fully FOSS supported hardware to take it's place.

Unless you count Lemote http://www.lemote.com/english/

Sun is no longer developing the OpenSPARQ.

Very interesting projects here, guyz.

It would be great to have the right to choose any open OS the customers wants, IMHO. Some examples:

1. http://www.haiku-os.org/
2. http://www.reactos.org/
3. http://www.syllable.org/
4. http://aros.sourceforge.net/

It would also be great if a part of proceeds were donated to their development.

I would LOVE to see AROS running on the Open-PC.
I'm still not sure if I will buy this PC, but I would definitively do if there is AROS running on it.
As another option I would also like to see Haiku on it, but AROS is my favourite.

 You tricked us!

 by U007 on: Jan 25 2010

The survery shows very clear:

- Netbook, NOT Nettop !

- 300$ - 400$, NOT 510$ !

- We want a DVD-Drive, NOT INCLUDED !

- the choice for 100GB - 300GB was useless. But the trend aims for more than 160GB if you check the answers scoring for <300GB. Windows machines with cannot have more than 160GB, so this free Nettop has to be the same?!

From whom for whom?

If this is really a project for the community, then follow its will and dont impose your preferences (for what reasons ever) on us!
Listen to our answers and build what we want - or rephrase your logo:

 Re: You tricked us!

Hi

I think the open PC fits the needs discriped in the surveys pretty well.

For example:

You're right, 39% want to have a Netbook but the rest of them want to have a non portable system like a Nettop or a Tower-PC (at least 32+28% = run about 60%!).

Well the price is really a little bit to high! Only 21%+ want to spent this much money for an ATOM based PC. I would be really interestet in the calculations for this 359€ ca. 510$ price.

The Mainboard ist around 66€ incl. Taxes
+ Case
+ PSU
+ 10% for KDE-Project
+ did I missed somethink ? Of course I did but what :-)?

The HDD-Space is more then enougth I gess and its in between 100-300GB! Even if its more on the 100GB site then on the 300GB site.

The question for the optical drive.. well thats not this clear for me what the community wants to have here. Of course 44% sad that they want to have a optical drive but the rest sad "no" or "maybe" and in fakt thats 56% of the community.

Woow I haven't wrote english for a long time.. sorry for the mistakes :-).

I never thought about it like that, it kind of makes me happy. Your right about the price too, even though I want to support the project I can't justify it especially with the shipping cost to Canada and that awful case,Gawd.

 BIOS

by jxself on: Jan 25 2010

The Open-PC name is something of a misnomer because there is non-free software in this computer: the BIOS.

The way to solve this problem is to run a free BIOS. And the free software community has developed free BIOSes--for instance, coreboot.

Will the folks behind the Open-PC publish the information on how to replace the non-free BIOS with a free one? If not, will they commit to only using motherboards that support free a BIOS?

Read about the Free Software Foundation's campaign for a free BIOS: http://www.fsf.org/campaigns/free-bios.html

All chipset used in the OpenPC are suppoerted buy coreboot. Check http://www.coreboot.org/Supported_Chipsets_and_Devices. The motherboard is not listed there but there's no reason it couldn't be.

Yes there is a reason that the motherboard isn't listed: Support for the chipset does not automatically mean that coreboot works. Coreboot must be ported to each motherboard supported, and that hasn't been done for this motherboard, so my original statement and question still stands.

I realize that man, I just said that someone could probably do it without too much difficulty. I would make this product unique and worth the price, just try and find one of the ancient boards supported on the web site. I actually have one but my CPU died btw.

coreBoot should come preinstalled on all new mainboards.
i've had many MBs die on me because i flashed the bios incorrectly.
then i had to unsolder the chip, find a new one and soldering that one back on, which is quite frankly annoying and not without risk.

Coreboot should have been included in the original product. As I said, the name is somewhat of a misnomer. Anyway, I'm done. I can build my own machine with Coreboot instead of this crazy project that tries to project the false image of openness. (I'll go look for a big "FAIL" stamp.) Bye.

 Expensive

by Manyoma on: Feb 2 2010

I think one can buy a HP Pavilion Slimline s5310f for a similar price, and it has more powerful hardware:

# AMD Athlon™ II X2 250 Dual-Core Processor
# 4GB DDR3-1066 SDRAM
# 640GB Hard Drive
# LightScribe SuperMulti DVD Burner
# NVIDIA GeForce 6150 SE

I know that kind of hardware doesn´t fit the requirements of the Open-PC project, but i think it makes this machine expensive.
